A Reflection on Week 1 of Ramadan 2013

I just wanted to make a quick post reflecting on my first week of Ramadan, Alhamdiallah it is going by much better than I expected. I have not been missing my prayers and I have been trying to read Quran everyday. I wish I could read straight out of the Quran but until I learn how to properly read my iPhone app will suffice.
Like most of us I was really worried about controlling my loud hungry growls especially at work but I quickly realized that was the least of my worries.
Staying away from food and water is the easy part, Having sabir (patience), not getting angry, staying away from music, not using bad language, and keeping up with all my prayers is the challenge. Of course all this should not be a challenge in the first place but I will admit because I know I am not alone that I do listen to music, a "bad word" does slip out here and there and I am not always the most patient. I think that is something we all need to remember, that fasting is actually much more than not eating and drinking.
